{"id":7431,"date":"2026-02-03T21:08:15","date_gmt":"2026-02-03T19:08:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/icsanaas.com.ua\/en\/?page_id=7431"},"modified":"2026-02-04T00:51:25","modified_gmt":"2026-02-03T22:51:25","slug":"about-institute","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/icsanaas.com.ua\/en\/about-institute\/","title":{"rendered":"About Institute"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>\u0406nstitute of Climate\u2011Smart Agriculture of the NAAS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>Institute of Climate\u2011Smart Agriculture of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine<\/strong> (NAAS) is a research institution within the National Academy, whose primary tasks include solving fundamental and applied problems in crop production on both irrigated and rainfed lands in southern Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Created on <strong>July 27, 2022<\/strong>, the Institute of Climate\u2011Smart Agriculture of NAAS resulted from the merger of the <strong>Institute of Irrigated Farming NAAS<\/strong>, the <strong>Rice Institute NAAS<\/strong>, and the <strong>Southern State Agricultural Research Station of the Institute of Water Problems and Reclamation NAAS<\/strong>, in accordance with the <a href=\"https:\/\/uk.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%D0%9A%D0%B0%D0%B1%D1%96%D0%BD%D0%B5%D1%82_%D0%9C%D1%96%D0%BD%D1%96%D1%81%D1%82%D1%80%D1%96%D0%B2_%D0%A3%D0%BA%D1%80%D0%B0%D1%97%D0%BD%D0%B8\">Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine Resolution No.\u202f1793\u2011r of December 29, 2021<\/a>, NAAS Resolution No.\u202f01\/01 of January 26, 2022, and NAAS Order No.\u202f9 of February 2, 2022.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Meanwhile, the <strong>Institute of Irrigated Agriculture NAAS<\/strong> traces its origins back to <strong>1889<\/strong>, when the Kherson Provincial Assembly established an experimental field at the Kherson Agricultural School. In <strong>1910<\/strong>, that site became the Kherson Agricultural Research Station, later evolving into the Cotton Institute. With the introduction of large\u2011scale irrigation in southern Ukraine in <strong>1956<\/strong>, it was reorganized into the <strong>Ukrainian Research Institute of Irrigated Farming<\/strong>; in <strong>2000<\/strong> it became the <strong>Institute of Farming of the Southern Region<\/strong> under the Ukrainian Academy of Agrarian Sciences; in <strong>2011<\/strong>, it took the name <strong>Institute of Irrigated Agriculture of the NAAS<\/strong>; and in <strong>2022<\/strong>, it was transformed into the Institute of Climate\u2011Smart Agriculture of NAAS. The Institute continues collaborating with multiple scientific institutions across Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>Rice Institute of NAAS<\/strong> was originally founded in <strong>1932<\/strong> as a cotton\u2011based experimental station attached to the Skadovsk Cotton State Farm\u202f\u2116\u202f1, part of the Ukrainian Research Cotton Institute. On <strong>June 11, 1963<\/strong>, this experimental site officially became the <strong>Rice Seeding Research Station<\/strong>. In <strong>2010<\/strong>, it was reorganized into the <strong>Rice Institute of NAAS<\/strong>. Scientists at the Rice Institute have developed and implemented advanced agromeliorative measures for soil fertility preservation and innovative water\u2011efficient irrigation methods. They are working on an economically sound, competitive development model for Ukrainian rice\u2011growing farms. Over the years, the Institute\u2019s researchers have developed and submitted over <strong>40 new rice varieties<\/strong> for state testing, of which <strong>14 have been approved<\/strong> and included in the State Register of Plant Varieties of Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>Southern State Agricultural Research Station<\/strong> of the Institute of Water Problems and Reclamation NAAS was established in <strong>1969<\/strong> as the <strong>Kherson Breeding Experimental Station of Melons and Vegetables<\/strong>. According to the Presidium of the Ukrainian Academy of Agrarian Sciences, in <strong>2001<\/strong> it was transformed into the <strong>Institute of Southern Vegetable and Melon Growing UAAS<\/strong>, a leading sectoral research body in Ukraine\u2019s melon crop industry. In <strong>2011<\/strong>, it was reorganized into the <strong>Southern State Agricultural Research Station of the Institute of Water Problems and Reclamation NAAS<\/strong>. Researchers conduct adaptive breeding of vegetable and melon crops to create new varieties and hybrids suited to all regions of Ukraine, taking into account maturity time, resistance to cold and heat, pests and diseases, drought, and other stressors. They have created over <strong>40 varieties<\/strong> and several hybrid types of melons and vegetables, and developed technology for ultra\u2011early production of watermelons, melons, and zucchini. In collaboration with the Institute of Gerontology (AMS of Ukraine) and the Medvedi Institute of Eco\u2011hygiene and Toxicology, they developed guidelines for producing eco\u2011safe, biologically valuable watermelon and pumpkin products suitable for dietary and health\u2011promoting nutrition. On this basis, they have created a range of functional, health\u2011beneficial, therapeutic, and preventive food products.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Under Ukraine\u2019s innovative agricultural development, the Institute of Climate\u2011Smart Agriculture of NAAS focuses on:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Developing methods for agro\u2011landscape management to create climate\u2011optimized land\u2011 and water\u2011use systems;<\/li>\n<li>Researching and developing modern climate\u2011oriented intensive, resource\u2011saving, organic, and innovative technologies for growing agricultural crops (including niche, energy, and medicinal crops) on both irrigated and rainfed lands;<\/li>\n<li>Scientifically validating the introduction of new agricultural species and the re\u2011introduction of regionally indigenous species to adapt them to current Ukrainian conditions;<\/li>\n<li>Conducting breeding research to produce climate\u2011resilient varieties and hybrids, maintaining primary and elite seed production for high\u2011quality seed propagation;<\/li>\n<li>Studying greenhouse gas emissions and sequestration in crop systems under various farming regimes on irrigated and non\u2011irrigated lands using low\u2011carbon cultivation technologies;<\/li>\n<li>Providing climate\u2011oriented technological guidance for crop and livestock production and processing, as implemented across diverse soil\u2011climatic zones of Ukraine;<\/li>\n<li>Creating high\u2011yield rice varieties with strong disease resistance, along with resource\u2011efficient cultivation technologies;<\/li>\n<li>Drafting and refining legal and regulatory frameworks to support state policies in climate\u2011oriented agriculture and combating climate change and desertification;<\/li>\n<li>Developing organizational and economic mechanisms for managing irrigated and rainfed lands, adapted to socially\u2011oriented market relations;<\/li>\n<li>Training highly qualified specialists for Ukraine\u2019s agriculture, research institutions, and higher education;<\/li>\n<li>Providing scientific support and advisory services to farming enterprises in climate\u2011oriented operations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Institute\u2019s developments constitute the scientific\u2011technical foundation for irrigated agriculture in Ukraine. Its researchers contribute to developing agrarian and grain farming strategies in Kherson region, Ukraine\u2019s forage production planning, and publish recommendations, directories, the inter\u2011departmental thematic collection \u201cIrrigated Farming,\u201d and the scientific journal \u201cAgrarian Innovations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Higher education training<\/strong> is available in two specializations: Agronomy (201) and Economics (051).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>PhD programs<\/strong> are offered full\u2011time (day and evening) and by correspondence. They include theoretical knowledge, practical competences for ideation, problem\u2011solving, methodology of scientific and pedagogical activity, and conducting research with substantive novelty and significance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Doctoral programs<\/strong> aim to finalize scientific research, prepare publications, and achieve the degree of Doctor of Sciences.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Annually, <strong>17\u201325 PhD students<\/strong> and <strong>3\u20135 doctoral students<\/strong> are enrolled.
