The main directions of scientific activity:

  • fundamental research is aimed at theoretical substantiation of the biological basis of production processes of new varieties of cereals, fodder and industrial crops on irrigated and non-irrigated lands with the use of biological products and optimization of agrotechnical methods, as well as ecological basis of protection of cereals and legumes from pests in organic farming and environmental protection in the context of regional climate change;
  • Applied research on the improvement and wide production development of varietal, resource-saving environmentally friendly technologies for growing major grain, industrial and fodder crops on irrigated and non-irrigated lands of southern Ukraine and growing seeds of legumes and cereal perennial grasses aimed at increasing productivity and maximizing the use of the bioclimatic potential of the zone and genetically determined capabilities of varieties and hybrids;
  • training of highly qualified scientific personnel;
  • improving the qualifications of agricultural specialists;
  • informational and advisory services for agricultural producers of Ukraine.

Main scientific achievements:

  • a database on the biological basis of production processes of new varieties of winter cereals and soybeans on irrigated lands with the use of biological products and optimization of agrotechnical methods was prepared, which ensures a conditional net profit depending on the crop in the range of 8000-16000 UAH/ha at a profitability level of 80-110%;
  • resource-saving technologies of winter wheat cultivation on non-irrigated and irrigated lands with yields of 5.0-5.5 and 6.0-6.5 t/ha while reducing the cost of fertilizers, pesticides and water by 28-30% and 11% for fuel;
  • resource-saving technology of winter barley cultivation on non-irrigated and irrigated lands with yields of 4.0-4.5 and 5.5-6.0 t/ha while reducing resource costs by 19-23%;
  • resource-saving technologies for the production of fodder agrocenoses were improved with the involvement of new varieties and hybrids, with optimal sowing dates, seeding rates, mineral nutrition and the use of plant protection against diseases and pests on irrigated lands, This ensures up to 12 t/ha of fodder units and 1.1 t of digestible protein on winter agrocenoses, as well as 45-57 t/ha of corn silage, 9-11.5 t/ha of corn grain and 3.5-9.4 t/ha of grain sorghum.
  • resource-saving technology for growing alfalfa seed crops under conditions of natural moisture supply (without irrigation) with a yield of conditioned seeds of 1.5-2.0 c/ha at a cost of 1 c of seeds not exceeding 1926.2 UAH and a conditional net profit of 4534-5245 UAH/ha and a profitability level of 293-340%;
  • energy-saving technologies for growing fodder and grain crops, which provide 3.5-4.0 t/ha of fodder units on the furrow and 8-10 t/ha on irrigation;
  • environmentally safe and cost-effective plant protection products in the technologies of growing grain crops on irrigated lands allow to save 10-15% of the crop from losses and prevent negative impact on agrocenoses;
  • ecologically balanced systems of short-rotation crop rotations for organic farming in non-irrigated conditions of the Southern Steppe of Ukraine, which provides 465-486 thousand tons of environmentally safe grain (environmentally friendly products) for food purposes for the needs of the population of Ukraine and for export;
  • complex endophytic rhizobial inoculation of seeds of different early maturity soybean varieties for their productivity and rhizosphere soil microbiota under irrigation contributes to a significant increase in the efficiency of symbiotic systems and, accordingly, the seed productivity of the crop.

Over the past 7 years, the employees of the department have received one doctorate degrees, 4 candidate of agricultural science degrees and one PhD degree in agronomy.
