The Department of Primary and Elite Seed Production is a structural research and production unit of the Institute of Climate-Smart Agriculture of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine. Administratively, it is subordinated to the Director of the Institute and the Deputy Director for Research.

The Department operates in accordance with the Laws of Ukraine, the Constitution of Ukraine, resolutions of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, acts of the President of Ukraine and the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, the Statute of the Institute, the Regulation on the Department of Primary and Elite Seed Production of the Institute of Climate-Smart Agriculture of the NAAS, and other regulatory acts.

Scientific coordination of research and technical programs within the Department lies with its Head.

Main Areas of Activity:

  • Multiplication of seeds of new and promising drought-resistant agricultural crops at the primary (pre-basic) and elite (basic) levels of seed production in the farms of southern Ukraine;
  • Monitoring compliance with methodologies of seed production across generations, ensuring varietal and sowing qualities of seeds;
  • Preparation and implementation of field inspections and documentation for certification of seed material;
  • Coordination of seed production of cereals, legumes, groat crops, technical and forage crops in the experimental farms of the Institute;
  • Supply of high-quality seeds of agricultural crop varieties to farms of various forms of ownership for variety renewal and replacement;
  • Development of innovative technologies and methodological approaches for seed production, as well as advisory and methodological support to agricultural producers;
  • Implementation in practice of optimized technologies for seed cultivation.

Services Provided by the Department

  • Information and consulting services on the characteristics of new and promising crop varieties, accelerated methods of multiplication, and elements of advanced seed cultivation technologies;
  • Scientific and coordination support for seed production challenges, including scientific supervision of seed production in the experimental farms of the Institute and agricultural enterprises of different ownership types;
  • Field inspections of seed crops to determine varietal purity and compliance with agronomic requirements, preparation of inspection reports and expert conclusions for subsequent seed certification.

Key Scientific Achievements:

  • Development of resource-saving and environmentally safe technologies for growing grain and seeds of maize hybrids of different maturity groups under irrigation in the Southern Steppe of Ukraine;
  • Identification of seed yield formation patterns in maize hybrids depending on the use of mineral fertilizers;
  • Creation of resource-efficient technologies for spring and winter rapeseed seed production at primary and elite levels in southern Ukraine;
  • Scientific substantiation of the effects of complex liquid micronutrients and growth stimulants on seed productivity and quality of new maize hybrids and parental lines;
  • Improvement of zonal technology elements for winter rapeseed seed production adapted to climatic conditions of the Southern Steppe of Ukraine;
  • Determination of optimal yield parameters for intensive maize hybrids and their parental lines under irrigation;
  • Development of technological elements for oilseed crop seed production based on optimal vegetative conditions;
  • Establishment of a database on chickpea yield formation depending on herbicide application and its effect on seed quality;
  • Identification of soil density and porosity changes in dark chestnut soils under various tillage systems in irrigated and rainfed conditions;
  • Optimization of parameters for improving sunflower seed quality and oil yield depending on the timing and combination of biopreparations;
  • Development of methodological recommendations for the use of legume forage crops to improve ecological, ameliorative, and phytosanitary soil conditions and enhance crop productivity in crop rotations;
